Book Discussion with Becky+

  • Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church 3775 Crosshaven Drive Birmingham, AL, 35223 United States (map)

This is a continuation of the fall book discussion group facilitated by Becky Watts, associate rector for formation.

Humans are social creatures: in this simple and obvious fact lies both the problem and the solution to the current crisis of loneliness. In his groundbreaking book, the 19th Surgeon General of the United States Dr. Vivek Murthy makes a case for loneliness as a public health concern. But, at the center of our loneliness is our innate desire to connect. We have evolved to participate in community, to forge lasting bonds with others, to help one another, and to share life experiences. We are, simply, better together. Told with great compassion and hope, Dr. Murthy makes a powerful and convincing argument for why we can and must build a more connected world.

We will meet on Wednesday evenings, 6:30-7:30 p.m. via Zoom, from Jan. 6 through Jan. 27, to discuss Dr. Vivek Murthy's book Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World. We will read and discuss two chapters each week. Once you register via this form, I will send you the Zoom link along with the schedule of which chapters we will read and discuss each week. The book is available for purchase in print, as an e-book, and as an audio book. You can learn more about the book here (including links to where you can purchase it online): https://www.vivekmurthy.com/together-book

We will read five books over the course of the spring. You are welcome to join us for all the books, or you can just commit to one book at a time, depending on what works best for you.
