The Book of Joy: The Rector’s Reading Class for April

I am excited to explore The Book of Joy by the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu.  The Book of Joy is a series of interviews and reflections compiled by Douglas Abrams who has traveled and written with Archbishop Tutu for over a decade.  This book is based on a few days journey to Dharamshala, India, the refuge of the Tibetan people and their Spiritual Leader, where the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Tutu gathered for a few days for the sole purpose of discussing “Joy.” As very deep and intimate friends, the book also explores their unique friendship as a starting place to dive into the source of joy and happiness that resides in each of us.

The book is based on their interviews and conversations and is broken into the days of their gathering and time together. The book will be explored with the following discussion schedule:

  • April 7:  Introductions and Arrival - Read through page 24.

  • April 14: The Nature of True Joy – Read through page 80.

  • April 21: The Obstacles of Joy – Read through page 190.

  • April 28:  The 8 Pillars of Joy – Read through the end of the book.

Anyone is welcome to join. We meet from 12:10pm-12:50pm online. You can join here.  Participants are expected to provide their own book.   If there is a financial burden to purchasing the book, please contact john@ssechurch.org.  May’s book will be Waking Up White by Debbie Irving.
