Avondale Outreach: Loving Our Neighbors through Food and Conversation

Originally, we served our neighbors in Avondale out of The Abbey, until the pandemic shut everything down and The Abbey closed its doors.

But our neighbors who are hard on their luck, homeless, or just needing a helpful hand are still counting on our breakfast ministry, so we decided we can continue to serve out of our cars in the alleyway between the Beloved Community Church and The Abbey’s former location.

As a partnership between Saint Stephen’s, All Saints, Ascension, The Abbey, and Food for our Journey, we formed the Avondale Breakfast Ministry to continue to serve hot breakfast sandwiches and snack bags—as well as to provide hygiene products and clothing—Monday through Friday every week.

So how can you help? This week, we are collecting blankets and men’s coats and jackets (sizes M, L, and XL) to help our Avondale friends be ready to stay warm over the coming fall and winter months. These items can be dropped off at the church between now and Friday, October 9.

Or, you can take your pick of one or more of the following ways of volunteering. Just use the Sign Up Genius linked in the Saint Stephen’s weekly newsletter to see how you can plug in to help.

  • You can donate food, water, and juice boxes.

  • You and your family can put together snack bags or sandwiches at home to be distributed to those in need.

  • You can take a more hands-on-role and help serve meals. Breakfast is served from 8:15 until 9:00 in the parking lot between the Beloved Community Church and The Abbey’s former location.

Over the past year, I have prepared and served meals, made new friends, and every week I receive more than I give. Please consider how you, your family, or your small group can get involved in helping our neighbors in Avondale. Please contact Dolly King at dolly924@bellsouth.net for more Information.
